Luiz Dardes has a degree in Law from the University of São Paulo (1991) and has also attended Law courses at Northwestern University School of Law in Chicago. He spent 9 years with Ernst & Young’s International Tax Group – nearly 5 of which in the United States, as Director of the Brazilian Tax Desk in Chicago, having national responsibility for servicing multinational clients with interests in Brazil and Latin America. He also worked as Director of International Tax and Customs for KPMG in Brazil and Latin American Tax Director for Suez Tractebel in Brazil (a Gas de France Suez company, largest privately owned electricity generator in Brazil, with global revenues of about EUR 120 billion). More recently, Luiz served for nearly 2 years as Brazil Desk for DLA Piper US LLP, based in New York City.
Luiz has a wide range of experience, including international tax planning, tax compliance, corporate reorganizations, as well as other tax and corporate matters, such as mergers and acquisitions, value-added tax, customs ans supply-chain, tax controversy, taxation of financial investments, intellectual property, software and transfer pricing.
Early on in his career, Luiz practiced as a barrister for five years in private practice, advising multinational companies in the areas of corporate and civil law, tax and intellectual property, including trademarks, software, intellectual property, copyright, assisting them on transactions both in Brazil and overseas. He has given speeches in numerous conferences in Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Dallas, Houston, Toronto, Montreal, Paris, Madrid, São Paulo and other locations. He is a Portuguese native speaker, is fluent in English and Spanish and has advanced knowledge in Dutch and Italian.

Corporate income taxes are levied on income derived by all legal entities established in or operating within Brazil. Resident legal entities are those incorporated under Brazilian law. Branches, agencies and representative offices of non-resident entities are also regarded as corporate taxpayers for purposes of corporate income taxes. Unincorporated business units, silent partnerships (sociedade em conta de participação) and some types of investment clubs are also treated as corporate taxpayers.
